Old Growth Ash Coffee Table

Mike and Christina wanted a coffee table to go with their new house. They wanted something with a thick top, but nice clean modern lines. I was able to source some Old Growth Ash timbers and had them milled to 3″ thick. The grain in the Ash is unbelievable. I was surprised to see that the Old Growth Timbers were in amazing condition and the pieces came off the mill like the day they were hoisted up into the barn.

We were asked to build an 8′x4′ board room table for Ottawa’s Northern Army. They’re a pretty awesome design studio here in Ottawa and wanted something special. We ended up coming across some amazing reclaimed Pine from outside Kemptville. The barn dated back to the 1870′s – 1880′s. The planks that we used for the table were floor joists and were absolutely pristine. Once dressed and finished the reclaimed pine was absolutely perfect for the table.

Freshly Milled Hard Maple

I’m pretty excited about these slabs. We just milled a big old 36″ maple log. We milled the slabs down to 2″ thick and 9′ long. The larger slabs are upwards of 28″ before they became too big for the sawmill. The lumber is heading off to the kiln this Friday. Can’t wait to get these back to the shop.

Just before the holidays i started working on 2 desks, a coffee table and a boardroom table, all for the same client. Here are some of the first photos for the coffee table. I’m using 2″ reclaimed Hemlock threshing floor from a barn near Chesterville. All of the tables will be built using lumber from the same barn. One of the other tables i just finished was also from the same farm.

Live Edge Walnut Countertop

This project is a little different for me, I’ve built tables of all kind, benches, stools and chairs, but never a countertop this large. It’s a 10′ live edge walnut countertop for Andrea Tomkins at www.quietfish.com. It’s a big old piece of salvaged walnut from Southern Ontario. The dimensions are 1.5″ thick, 10′ long and between 18-20″ deep. It’s going to make for a beautiful countertop in their newly renovated home.

6′ Reclaimed Hemlock Table

I’ve been meaning to post photos of the progression for this table as well. It’s another 6′ long reclaimed Hemlock table, made from reclaimed threshing floor from just outside Chesterville. The threshing floor came from the same barn as this table here. It’s 6′ long with two 14″ extensions on the ends, pushing it to 100″ when it’s all done. It’s going to be beautiful.

Salvaged Walnut Desks

Back in December i started working on these two 6′ live edge walnut desks. They’re big, really big. They’re also the last two slabs from the large walnut we milled in the spring. I’m working with Maureen at www.modecor.ca. The slabs are nice and flatten and ready for me to start cutting the dutchmen.

Spalted Maple Coffee Tables

Two months ago we picked up 7 big round cuts from the end of an old urban maple. The tree came from a beautiful property in Westboro. The maple had been cut a couple years ago, but some of the butt cuts were left. They’d been sitting in the wind, the rain, the sun and snow. We hauled them to the mill and once we started cutting we were happy to see that they were all spalted. They’re beautiful. Unfortunately half the load checked too much and broke apart in the kiln, but we still have some beautiful pieces to work with.

6′ Kitchen Table

A couple of months ago Alison contacted us about having a custom kitchen table made. The kicker was that she and her husband Matt would be supplying the lumber. Sometimes that can be a bad thing, I’ve had people drop off wood that was beyond useable, but there was a special attachment to it for one reason or another, so it was used. Now this lumber is different, it’s amazing. In places it seems to have a bit of a reddish tint to it, but it’s also ridiculously heavy. At first glance i figured it was Cherry, because of the reddish tint, but as i started to plane and peel off the grey, it looks like we’re working with some Old Growth Maple. The grain in the wood is really, really tight and based on the age of the wood it would definitely be old growth. The story behind the wood, is that it belonged to Matt’s grandfather who used to work and live in the Arnprior area. Alison and Matt inherited the two big pieces of lumber when Matt’s grandfather passed away. I think Matt’s grandfather had special plans for it, but never got around to using it. Now it’s our turn.

7′ Reclaimed Harvest Table

Just wrapping up the final touches on a this table, I’ve been so busy i forgot to post photos as it was coming along. It’s a modern take on the harvest table. We’ve been using 2″ reclaimed hemlock threshing floor from a barn out towards Chesterville. The barn dated to the 1870′s – 1880′s. The character and wear in the reclaimed hemlock planks is amazing. You can still see some of the original saw marks as well. It’s going to be beautiful when it’s all finished up.

Siberian Elm Side Tables

Along with the beautiful coffee tables, these slabs were also large enough to produce a couple sets of side tables. We tried something a little different and had the tables bases powder coated in an amazing Robin’s Egg Blue. They were a big hit and were sold at another Urban Craft event.

Siberian Elm Coffee Tables

This summer we came across some amazing Siberian Elm slabs. They were close to 10′ long, 18″ wide and milled to 3″ thick. The tree had been originally taken down for firewood. The grain is beautiful and we finally decided to build a few tables with it. The first table was a live edge coffee table, the table was built for an Urban Craft show here in Ottawa.

Old Growth Oak

Back in July we were lucky to have been mentioned in an article about reclaimed wood in the Ottawa Citizen, a couple of days later we were even luckier to have received an email from someone who had read the article. She was looking to find someone who would be interested in salvaging some of the pews from the old Westboro United church. It had been bought by a local developer and they wanted to find new homes for the pews. If not, they would all end up at the landfill. This past week we spent 2 days salvaging what we could. The lumber is beautiful old growth oak. We’re looking forward to putting it to good use.

Working away at another big dining room table. We’re super happy with the reclaimed hemlock threshing floor planks we’re using. The planks were sourced from an old barn near Kemptville dating back to the 1880′s. Each plank is reclaimed Eastern Hemlock. We’re going to be trying something different with the base, it’s going to be a modern take on a trestle base, it’s going to be beautiful.

We do our best to keep waste to a minimum. From offcuts to live edge solid walnut and cherry cutting boards. These cutting boards, butcher blocks, charcuterie boards and cheese boards are all made from local wood. Each piece is hand sanded to a super smooth finish and then oiled using an environmentally-friendly, non-toxic oil. The oil penetrates into the wood, protecting it against drying, cracking and water damage.

Old growth reclaimed Hemlock is pretty amazing, the tight grain, the colour, there’s something beautiful about it. Here’s our latest build using reclaimed hemlock threshing floor. It’s sitting on a custom 1″ square tube base. We even had enough reclaimed wood from a previous tables to build it. The wood is from a barn just outside Ottawa that dated back to the 1870′s – 1880′s.

Old Growth Cedar

A few weeks ago we had a client drop off a beautiful old-growth western red cedar slab. It had been picked up on a family trip to Victoria in the early 80′s. The owner wanted us to refinish it and weld some legs for it. It had been coated with a self levelling epoxy that had really yellowed over time. It was a challenge, but we’re really happy with how it turned out. I wish we saw more old-growth cedar. The annual rings are amazing!

Here’s the final slab from the slabs we picked up that had been forgotten for all those yard. It’s all ready to go. It’s been hand planed to 2″ and varies from 19″-24″ at the widest. I wish there was more. These slabs were amazing.

Here’s a 6′ dining room table made from reclaimed old growth hemlock. The threshing floor was pulled from a barn out near Chesterville that dated back to the late 1870′s to mid 1880′s. We tried something a little different and filled some of the deeper cracks and fissures in the wood with a clear epoxy. We’re super happy with how it turned out!

I had a client contact us from New York, they were looking for a large 36-40″ walnut slab for a huge coffee table in their new house. Unfortunately walnut doesn’t grow that large here, so I had to look around. I came across someone in Southern Ontario who was milling some monster walnut logs. He sent me some photos and i quickly had one milled. My dad and i drove just under 15 hours a few weeks later to pick it up. We had a quick stop in Toronto, to deliver a board room table and then we were off to a small town around Windsor. The tree yielded 14 massive slabs.

8′ Dining Room Table

Back at it! I’m working on another dining room table, using the reclaimed harbour hemlock from the 1830′s Queens Wharf in Toronto. The planks are jointed, planed and ready for glue up. I can’t wait to get to the finishing, i love this wood. The grain is full of black, gray, brown, blue and even purple. You can’t beat it! This table is going to be gorgeous. I’m using reclaimed hemlock from Toronto’s Queens Wharf. People are telling me the wood is from 1790, while others are saying it’s from the 1830′s, either way it’s ridiculously amazing and ridiculously old. The first project is a 9′ dining room table. The base is finished and is being powder coated in matte black. The planks are acclimatizing before i start to work with them. The grain in this wood is like no other. I’m pretty excited.

I have a shop full of offcuts. Hundreds and hundreds of pieces of reclaimed wood that were saved from other projects. There’s everything from White Oak, Red Oak, Butternut, Pine and Hemlock. I’ve been saving them for something, and until now i wasn’t sure what. I’ve decided I’m going to use them for two projects I’m working on. The first is a hallway or sofa table I’m building. It’s going to be a steel frame with a reclaimed wood top. The second project is a top for a very old bakers table that I picked up. I’ve stripped years and years of paint from the apron and legs and i’m going to build a new top using the offcuts. I’ve ordered some Annie Sloan Chalk paint for the apron and legs. It’s going to look amazing!

Here is the latest table to be completed. This slab is originally from Southern Ontario, it was sitting in a barn for nearly 15 years until it made it’s way here to me. This coffee table measures 5′ long and 20″ wide at its widest point. It’s 1.75″ thick of solid Black Walnut. Hand polished with 6 coats of Tung Oil and sitting pretty on black steel legs.

This one measures 62″ long, 22″ wide at the widest end and 15″ at the other. 2.25″ thick of solid Walnut goodness. Hand polished with 7 coats of Tung Oil. Sitting pretty on black steel legs.

I’ve finally been able to start working on two ridiculously gorgeous live edge slabs of salvaged walnut. They had been sitting in a friend’s barn for atleast 15 years. Each slab is around 2″ thick and 4-5 feet long. One of the slabs is highly figured. The welded legs are painted and ready to go and I’m just laying down the final coats of Tung Oil. These babies are gleaming!

Threshing Floor

Early next week, i’ll be starting on another table. Once finished it will be around 36″ wide by 72″ long. There will also be 2 extensions for the ends to bring it up to 9′ long when fully used. The top will be constructed using 2″ threshing floor. I love the feel and grain of this wood, I can’t wait to get going on it.

There’s nothing like working with reclaimed wood, It’s texture, colour and tight grain is unbeatable. For those of us who are lucky enough to live around Ottawa, we’re surrounded by history, whether its the old barns and structures that provide the wood or whether its the lumber history of the region. I heard something the other day that had me thinking, if i’m working with a piece of threshing floor, or barnboard that was from a 150 year old barn, the tree that provided the plank likely rooted another 100-150 years before that. That’s pretty awesome. I hope you enjoy our work!
